Audible rapidly expands audiobook catalog with AI narration

Amazon’s audiobook service, Audible, has partnered with select publishers to accelerate the expansion of its catalog using AI narration technology. The move positions Audible more competitively against Apple, Spotify, and other major players in the fast-growing audiobook market.

Publishers can now choose from over 100 AI-generated voices in English, French, Spanish, and Italian, including multiple accents and dialects. Audible also plans to roll out AI-powered translation services later this year, offering beta text-to-text and speech-to-speech translation from English into Spanish, French, Italian, and German. Publishers will have the option to have these translations reviewed by professional linguists.

In 2023, Amazon introduced a virtual voice tool for independent authors in the U.S. to convert e-books into audiobooks using synthetic speech technology. Currently, over 50,000 titles on Audible are labeled as “Narrated by: Virtual Voice.”

However, the use of AI-generated narration has sparked debate among publishers and listeners. Critics argue that synthetic narration may lack the emotional depth and quality of human narrators.

Competitors are also moving fast. Spotify, for example, announced a partnership with AI voice provider ElevenLabs in early 2024 to expand its own audiobook offering.

The rapid commercialization of AI-driven content creation is clearly poised to reshape the future of the audiobook industry.
