Discord, which revolutionized the world of online communication, is now heading for an IPO (publicly traded company) after 10 years of existence. Originally a platform for gamers, the platform has now become a major conversation space for groups ranging from AI projects to school clubs.
But behind this success lies a problem: real-time conversations are often cluttered with unnecessary messages, and useful information is often lost. Traditional forums offer more order and structure in this regard.
What is Discord going to do?
According to The Verge, Discord’s senior vice president of product, Peter Sellis, acknowledged this problem and said that he wants to add tools to the platform that allow for more “structured knowledge exchange.” Another idea: using AI to turn long, confusing conversations into concise summaries.
Sellis says:
- “We’re working on technology that can turn long conversations into comments that can be shared on the web. But we don’t have a solution that we’re completely happy with yet.”
AI technologies, especially large language models (LLMs), could solve this problem. But user reactions to AI are mixed: some are fascinated, others are concerned.
With a new CEO, an IPO, and major changes, Discord is expected to bring a new interface and features to users.
