OpenAI’s vice president of post-training, Liam Fedus, has announced that he is leaving the company to found a new startup focused on artificial intelligence and materials science.
According to The Information, Fedus made the decision to leave OpenAI and confirmed this information on the X platform (formerly Twitter). In his statement, he said:
“I have a bachelor’s degree in physics and am interested in applying this technology to this field. The potential of AI in science is one of the most strategically important areas for OpenAI, and will play a major role in achieving artificial general intelligence (ASI). Therefore, OpenAI plans to invest in and collaborate with my new company.”
The new startup will compete with Google DeepMind, Microsoft and other technology giants in the creation of materials using artificial intelligence. In 2023, DeepMind announced that it had discovered new diamonds using its Gnome AI system. Microsoft recently introduced AI tools called MatterGen and MatterSim, which aim to automate the process of researching and creating materials.
At the same time, some experts argue that current AI technologies are not yet up to the task of making fundamental scientific discoveries.
Are new breakthroughs expected at the intersection of materials science and AI? News in this regard may soon be reflected.
