Now, WhatsApp will allow you to use your username instead of your phone number. According to WABetaInfo, the new functionality is being tested in the beta version 25.17.10.70 for iOS.
This change allows users to protect their personal information by hiding their number. There are a few restrictions when choosing a name:
- Only Latin letters, numbers, periods, and dashes are allowed
- The name must be between 3 and 30 characters long
- Domains (“.com”) and “www.” are prohibited
- Repeated usernames cannot be distinguished by characters
It is not yet clear when this feature will be made available to the public, but WhatsApp is taking an important step towards increasing user privacy.
