Tinder is now letting users indicate their height preference. The feature is currently only available to Tinder Gold and Premium subscribers and is in a global beta.
The new setting isn’t a hard filter — it won’t completely hide profiles of people of different heights. It’s just that the algorithm will give you recommendations based on your preferences.
Tinder says the move is a result of user feedback: “We’re always listening to what’s important to Tinder users. The height preference feature is a testament to our commitment to building solutions that are purposeful, fast, and user-friendly.”
This approach is currently being tested and could become a permanent feature or disappear in the future.
The emphasis on appearance is nothing new in the online dating world. Tinder’s “left/right swipe” system has already fueled this trend. Women’s profiles, in particular, often include phrases like “Please do not disturb anyone under 6 feet.”
Tinder has previously announced a “neck checker” feature as a joke on this topic, but that was an April Fool’s idea. Now the company is taking the issue seriously.
Tinder’s innovation also comes against the backdrop of a decline in Match Group subscribers. Last year, the number of paid users was 14.9 million, but this year it fell to 14.2 million. The company is looking to attract a larger audience, especially women, through this feature.
Tinder wants to allow “more informed choices” through the new feature. But while this innovation is a convenience for some, it may be perceived as relying on too superficial criteria for others.
