The race to build AI infrastructure is no longer just about GPUs and AI chips. Another critical component has become increasingly important: DRAM, the main memory used in computers, smartphones, and servers. Since October 2025, the global market has been facing a DRAM shortage, and the situation is still ongoing. According to industry reports, prices for certain DRAM products have increased by nearly fourfold since the beginning of the year.
Modern AI systems process enormous amounts of data, requiring not only powerful GPUs but also massive amounts of high-speed memory. As major technology companies invest billions of dollars into AI data centers, a growing share of global DRAM production is being allocated to AI infrastructure instead of consumer electronics.
As a result, manufacturers of laptops, smartphones, and other devices are facing tighter memory supplies. In simple terms, even the most powerful AI chip cannot perform without sufficient memory. That has turned DRAM into one of the most strategic resources in the AI era. Rising memory costs are now beginning to affect the prices of finished products. Apple provides a recent example.
One of the company’s key memory suppliers, Micron, reportedly raised DRAM prices. Shortly afterward, Apple increased the prices of several Mac and iPad models, with some configurations becoming $200–500 more expensive. The company cited higher component costs as one of the reasons behind the price adjustments. The situation also sparked a viral joke across the tech community. A blogger posted a satirical message pretending to be Micron’s CEO:
“For more than 10 years, Apple bought our memory chips for a few dollars, put them inside aluminum boxes, and sold customers a $99 memory upgrade. When we asked for $7, they laughed. Now we asked for $50, and they raised prices for their customers by $250.” The quote is not real, but the joke quickly spread online because it reflects the long-running criticism of Apple’s premium pricing for memory upgrades.
Just a few years ago, GPUs were considered the most valuable resource in the AI race. Today, DRAM has joined that list. This shift highlights how AI demand is reshaping the entire electronics supply chain. Memory manufacturers are becoming some of the industry’s most strategically important players, and if the shortage continues, consumers may soon see higher prices not only for AI servers but also for laptops, smartphones, and tablets.
