Claude is no longer an AI agent tied to your desktop. Anthropic has expanded Claude Cowork to iOS, Android, and the web, allowing users to start a task on their computer and continue monitoring or managing it from their phone. More importantly, users no longer need to keep their laptop open while the AI works in the background.
Claude Cowork, introduced earlier this year, is designed to function as an AI agent rather than a traditional chatbot. Instead of simply answering questions, it can complete tasks across connected services such as email, documents, Slack, calendars, and other workplace tools, delivering finished results with minimal user intervention.
With the new mobile and web experience, workflows become significantly more flexible. A user can assign Claude tasks like preparing a meeting brief, drafting emails, gathering research, or organizing documents before leaving the office. The AI continues working independently while users track its progress, review updates, or provide additional instructions directly from their smartphone.
The rollout is currently available in beta for Claude Max subscribers, with Anthropic planning to expand access to additional paid plans in the coming weeks. Some capabilities, such as direct interaction with local desktop files, remain exclusive to the desktop application.
This launch represents more than just a new app—it reflects a broader shift in the AI industry. Technology companies are increasingly moving beyond chatbots toward autonomous AI agents capable of carrying out complex, multi-step tasks on behalf of users. While OpenAI is advancing similar concepts with its remote coding and agent-based tools, Anthropic is positioning Claude Cowork as a productivity platform that seamlessly follows users across devices.
If 2025 was the year of AI chatbots, 2026 is rapidly becoming the year of AI agents. By bringing Claude Cowork to mobile and the web, Anthropic is signaling that the future of AI is no longer about generating answers—it is about completing real work. The next stage of competition won’t simply be about who builds the most powerful model, but who creates the AI agent that integrates most naturally into people’s daily workflows.
