Apple seeks AI advantage: which startups are on its radar?
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Telegram

For years, Apple has been one of the least aggressive acquirers among Big Tech companies. Its last major purchase dates back to 2014, when it bought Beats Electronics for $3 billion. But as competition in artificial intelligence (AI) heats up and Apple risks falling behind, investors are calling for bolder moves.

During the recent earnings call, CEO Tim Cook stated:

“We’re open to acquiring companies of any size if they can help accelerate our roadmap.”

With $133 billion in cash reserves, Apple has the capacity to make significant deals. Until now, the company has preferred a conservative M&A strategy, but that approach could soon change.

Five key contenders recommended by experts

1. Perplexity — AI Search Engine

  • Could significantly enhance Siri and Spotlight’s natural language understanding and contextual search capabilities.
  • Positions Apple more strongly against Google in the search market.
  • Several analysts describe this as “the obvious choice” for Apple.

2. Mistral AI — Open-Source LLM Developer Based in Europe

  • Has struggled to break into the top tier due to limited resources.
  • Apple could supply GPUs and funding to transform it into a leading AI lab.
  • Estimated valuation: $10 billion.

3. Oomii — Augmented Reality Technology

  • Retinal-scan displays could dramatically improve AR experiences.
  • Would enhance capabilities for Vision Pro and other Apple devices.
  • Simple ownership structure makes acquisition easier.

4. Synthpop — AI for Healthcare Administration

  • Strengthens Apple’s HealthKit ecosystem.
  • Experienced in working with U.S. insurers and hospital networks.
  • Prioritizes privacy and security, in line with Apple’s brand values.

5. Thinking Machines Lab — AI Lab Founded by Mira Murati

  • Potential to personalize Siri and deeply integrate AI into Apple’s mobile ecosystem.
  • Founded by former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati.
  • Current valuation estimated at $20 billion.

Bottom line

Apple is at a strategic turning point. To secure a stronger position in AI, enhance user experience, and expand its creative and media capabilities, the company must make decisive acquisitions. According to industry experts, Apple’s next big move is likely to be firmly rooted in AI.
