One of the leaders in educational technology, Duolingo, has recently radically changed its personnel policy: now the company will not hire people for jobs that can be performed by artificial intelligence (AI). This was officially announced by the company’s CEO Luis von Ana on his LinkedIn page.
According to him, Duolingo will attract new specialists only for projects that AI cannot do, where human creativity and approach are required. In other areas, AI will play a leading role.
The company launched a GPT-4-based service – Duolingo Max – in 2023 and has since begun to replace many translators, content creators and other performers with artificial intelligence.
Louis von Ana says:
“Good education requires a lot of content. Instead of creating it slowly with humans, we chose to accelerate this process with AI. Otherwise, these tasks would take decades.”
Duolingo will now:
- No longer hire people for tasks that AI can do;
- It will also gradually abandon the services of contractors;
- It will focus all its efforts on creating effective, AI-based content.
At the same time, the company emphasized that it will not completely replace its employees with AI, but will redirect them to creativity and problem-solving instead of repetitive tasks.
This decision shows how powerful artificial intelligence is playing not only at Duolingo, but also in the entire educational technology (edtech) sector.
