Southeast Asia’s Leading Super App

Grab is one of Southeast Asia’s largest technology companies, initially launched as a taxi service in 2012. Over the years, it has expanded its offerings to include food delivery, logistics, and financial services. Today, Grab operates in more than six countries, serving over 190 million users, making it one of the region’s most prominent super apps.

The Founders and the Birth of Grab

Grab was founded in 2012 by Anthony Tan and Tan Hooi Ling, who were inspired by a business conference in the U.S. Anthony Tan is a Harvard Business School graduate, while Tan Hooi Ling studied at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. They saw an opportunity to solve transportation challenges in Southeast Asia through technology.

Originally launched as “MyTeksi”, the company quickly gained traction, leading to a rebranding as “Grab” in 2013 to accommodate a broader range of services.

Grab’s Growth and Investments

Over the years, Grab has attracted major investors to fuel its expansion. It has raised over $10 billion from leading investors, including SoftBank Vision Fund, Temasek Holdings, and Microsoft. The company is headquartered in Singapore and has offices in more than 30 cities across Southeast Asia.

In 2021, Grab went public through a Special Purpose Acquisition Company (SPAC) merger, valuing the company at $40 billion, making it one of the largest SPAC deals of its time.

Economic Impact and Innovation

Today, Grab employs over 2 million people and contributes billions of dollars to Southeast Asia’s GDP. The company plays a crucial role in driving technological advancements and innovative business models that transform the way people live and work in the region.

Grab’s Core Services

  1. Ride-Hailing: Various transport options, including taxis, private cars, and motorcycles.
  2. Food Delivery: GrabFood allows users to order meals from partnered restaurants.
  3. Express Delivery: GrabExpress provides same-day delivery for parcels and goods.

Financial Services: Grab Financial Group offers payment solutions, insurance, and micro-financing.

Expansion and Uber Acquisition

To strengthen its position in the transport sector, Grab acquired Uber’s Southeast Asian operations, absorbing its driver-partners and expanding its user base, solidifying its dominance in the region.

Rebranding and Service Diversification

In 2016, Grab removed “Taxi” from its brand name, symbolizing its transition beyond just ride-hailing to a full-fledged digital ecosystem.

The company has since introduced:

GrabFinancial – Financial services, including digital wallets, lending, and insurance.

GrabCar – Private car rentals,

GrabFood – Food delivery services,

GrabExpress – Courier and logistics,

GrabPay – Digital payment platform,

The Future of Grab

Today, Grab is one of the largest digital ecosystems in Southeast Asia, serving millions of users daily. The company continues to invest in AI, big data, and emerging technologies to enhance its services.

Grab remains committed to boosting the regional economy, creating job opportunities, and making everyday life more convenient for its users.
