Gravitas Protocol is building Shariah-compliant infrastructure for digital-asset settlement

Gravitas Protocol, a project being developed on Arbitrum, is building a policy-controlled layer that lets banks, payment companies and Islamic-finance institutions manage digital assets under enforceable rules. The project is currently at pre-seed stage and running on testnet, but it targets a real gap at the intersection of DeFi and Islamic finance: the lack of institutional-grade controls.

Banks, payment providers, stablecoin issuers and investment funds are exploring blockchain-based settlement. But speed and programmability alone aren’t enough for them — they need governance over which assets are permitted, the purpose of each transaction, jurisdictions, counterparties, and risk controls. For Islamic-finance institutions, that list gets longer: transactions also need to avoid riba (interest-based return), gharar (excessive uncertainty) and maysir (speculative mechanics).

Gravitas Protocol’s core idea is straightforward: approved policies are connected directly to transaction execution. Two main components make this work:

  • Policy Registry — records an on-chain whitelist of approved assets and use cases. Every transaction is checked against this registry before execution; if conditions aren’t met, the transaction is reverted. Policy changes go through multi-signature approval and a timelock delay, and every version is permanently recorded on-chain, creating an audit trail that can’t be quietly amended later.
  • TeleportV3 — an atomic-execution architecture. A migration or settlement that would normally require four to six separate transactions is bundled into a single operation: it either completes exactly as pre-agreed, or it doesn’t happen at all. This removes the “partially completed” state that institutions want to avoid.

The project is explicit that the software doesn’t decide Shariah compliance on its own — that responsibility stays with scholars, regulators and compliance teams. Gravitas’s role is to consistently enforce already-approved legal and religious policies at the software level and keep a clear execution record.

The project is still early. Its smart contracts are deployed and source-verified on the Arbitrum Sepolia testnet (Chain ID: 421614), but according to the official site, all dashboard metrics are currently demo/simulation data — no real funds are moving through it yet. Mainnet deployment is planned after an independent security audit and formal Shariah certification are completed, both funded by the current pre-seed round. The exact amount raised and the investor list haven’t been disclosed.

Near-term priorities include finishing work tied to existing LOIs (Letters of Intent — early, non-binding agreements with prospective clients), completing technical and security documentation, clarifying licensing requirements, and structuring pilot programs. The revenue model is simple: it’s based on service fees (5–10 basis points) per transaction rather than interest-based income.

Islamic finance — a market worth trillions of dollars globally — has largely stayed outside DeFi infrastructure, not for lack of interest but because tools that enforce compliance at the code level haven’t existed. If projects like Gravitas can let banks and funds test tokenized assets, stablecoins and cross-border payments under real controls, that could open a path for Islamic-finance institutions into digital assets.

At the same time, it’s worth stating plainly: this is still a concept under development, not a product that has been tested in the market. Working with institutional clients requires a long sales cycle and extensive security and regulatory review, and an LOI hasn’t yet turned into a paying client. The project’s success will ultimately hinge on that transition — whether early interest converts into real transaction volume and sustainable revenue.
