Stephanie Filinskaya, 23, Tashkent
Founder of the jewelry brand STELFI and co-owner of the merchandising company TextileHub | @stefka.style
About Me
I live and work at the intersection of two worlds: fashion and business. I founded the local jewelry brand Stelfi and am also a co-owner of the textile company Textile Hub.
I completed my undergraduate studies at MDIS in Tashkent, specializing in Fashion Product and Promotion from the University of Sunderland, UK. I am currently pursuing a master’s degree in Fashion Studies at the University of Bologna in Italy.
The Beginning of My Journey
I was born in Tashkent. People often say that opportunities depend on the size of your city, but I disagree. Success depends on your desire to grow and the effort you put in. If you know what you want, no limitations can hold you back.
From a young age, I was curious and eager to try new things. My parents encouraged my curiosity and drive, for which I am deeply grateful. Their support instilled high ambitions in me.
Career Milestones
My career choices were deliberate. Even when applying for university, I knew I wanted to build a career in fashion.
During my studies at MDIS, I began my journey in the fashion industry thanks to the support of the faculty head, Malika Ermatova. She encouraged me to participate in Tashkent’s first fashion incubator project. This hands-on experience allowed me to gain practical knowledge, build valuable connections, and understand how the industry operates.
The next pivotal step was working at Textile Hub. Here, I delved into the textile industry, learning about clothing production, collaborating with factories, and negotiating with international brands. This experience gave me a broader and deeper perspective on the process of creating products.
Stereotypes and Challenges
I’ve encountered various stereotypes. People often commented that I was too young to understand the industry or that fashion isn’t a career but a hobby. The best way to counter such remarks is through results. When your work speaks for itself, there’s no room for argument.
There’s also a belief that it’s harder for women, especially young ones, to succeed. Some think we can’t handle stress or that our success is mere luck. That’s why it’s crucial to surround yourself with the right people—those who believe in you and support your growth.
Advice
Effective communication is fundamental. Clear and confident communication can solve any problem. It’s essential to listen, express your thoughts clearly, and connect with people.
For me, it’s crucial to see things through and keep promises.Having clear goals is the cornerstone of progress. Without them, it’s hard to move forward. Don’t hesitate to seize opportunities and try new things. Only through experience can you truly understand what works for you. I believe this approach helped me take my first steps in the fashion industry.
Pokiza Kosimova, 28 years old, Tashkent, General Director of Expo Position, @24p.k, @expo.position
About Me
In 2019, I graduated from the Tashkent State University of Oriental Studies, specializing in World Politics.
I lead Expo Position, a company that focuses on organizing international exhibitions and conferences.
The Beginning of My Journey
I was born and raised in the ancient city of Bukhara. In 2015, I enrolled in university and moved to Tashkent. I have now been living and working here for nine years.
The size of a city impacts professional growth. Metropolises provide more opportunities and chances to implement ideas. However, cities like Bukhara and Samarkand are no less promising. Their rich history and centuries-old monuments attract global attention. This enables residents to continuously evolve and broaden the horizons of entrepreneurship and craftsmanship.
Career Milestones
When it comes to my career, I have always been ambitious. I started working at the International School of Mental Arithmetic Aloha while still a student.
After the pandemic and graduating from university, I began working at Expo Position. I discovered the vibrant and multifaceted world of exhibitions. As a project manager for BeautyExpo Uzbekistan, I was responsible for attracting participants and managing organizational matters.
Attracting international participants and organizing exhibitions is a monumental task. We create a significant international platform for manufacturers and suppliers. At these exhibitions, companies sign contracts, find new partners, and expand their influence. This inspiring outcome drives us to continue creating such unique projects. Additionally, our company specializes in constructing exclusive stands both in Uzbekistan and internationally.
A few years later, I was offered the position of General Director. It was not an easy decision, as running a business demands a lot of time and energy. Balancing career and personal life can be challenging for someone with a family. However, with the support of my husband and family, I decided to take the risk. Now, I am grateful for this opportunity and have no regrets.
Stereotypes and Challenges
As women advance in their careers, they often encounter skepticism from men. It’s essential to consistently demonstrate professionalism and competence to dispel doubts.
I have also faced the challenge of finding qualified personnel. It can be difficult to find motivated employees who align with your vision for project development. We invest significant resources and time in searching for and training staff, and we expect results in return.
Recommendations
Success in life and business requires strategic thinking, discipline, flexibility, and continuous development.
My main advice: believe in yourself and don’t be afraid to try new things. No matter what challenges you face at the beginning, self-confidence and a willingness to learn at every step are key factors that will help you overcome obstacles.
