Kazakhstan signs $10Bn deal with NVIDIA and Firebird

Kazakhstan has taken a major strategic step in the technology sector by signing a landmark $10 billion agreement with U.S.-based AI infrastructure firm Firebird and semiconductor leader NVIDIA. Representing the largest digital investment in Central Asia’s history, the project is described by Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov as a fundamental pillar of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s “Digital Qazaqstan” strategy, aligning with the country’s 2026 Year of Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence initiative. To understand the long-term impact of this massive deployment, we examine the primary macroeconomic opportunities and tangible outcomes this project will deliver to Kazakhstan’s economy.

As part of the ambitious “Data Center Valley” project in Ekibastuz, state-of-the-art data centers and a massive computing cluster will be established. It will feature up to 100,000 of NVIDIA’s next-generation graphics processing units (GPUs), including the GB300 and Vera Rubin chips.

The Outcome: According to the CEO of Firebird, once launched in 2027, this project could catapult Kazakhstan into the world’s top 10 countries for artificial intelligence infrastructure.

$3 Billion in annual export revenue

This project is not designed merely to satisfy domestic needs. The immense computing power generated will enable Kazakhstan to provide high-tech services on an international scale. Government projections estimate that this initiative will secure at least $3 billion annually in export revenue for the country.

Kazakhstan has traditionally been an economy heavily reliant on hydrocarbon (oil and gas) exports. This project serves as a cornerstone of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s “Digital Qazaqstan” strategy. The project will help shift the economy away from raw material dependence, transforming it into a highly technological and digital economy.

The initiative goes far beyond just installing servers. Through ecosystem-building measures, such as Firebird Labs Kazakhstan at Alem.ai and strategic cooperation with Kazakhtelecom, a brand-new digital ecosystem will be forged. It will create thousands of high-paying, high-skilled jobs for the country’s young and well-educated population, enabling local talent to become competitive professionals in the global AI market.

Turning energy resources into high-value outputs

Globally, AI data centers consume vast amounts of electricity, posing a significant bottleneck for many nations. As NVIDIA Vice President Rev Lebaredian highlighted, Kazakhstan’s abundant and relatively cheap energy resources—including renewables—give the country a genuine competitive edge.

The Outcome: Instead of exporting raw energy resources, Kazakhstan will be able to convert its electricity into “digital gold”—AI computing power—**and sell it at a much higher value.

Global Comparison

The sheer scale of this project allows Kazakhstan to go toe-to-toe with major global players:

  • United Kingdom: Building a $14 billion (£11 billion) AI infrastructure under the Stargate UK project with NVIDIA.
  • Malaysia: Partnering with NVIDIA on a $4.3 billion green data center park.
  • Kazakhstan: Aiming for a leading position in this global race with a $10 billion investment.

While this $10 billion memorandum likely involves phased and conditional elements, it sends one clear signal: Kazakhstan refuses to be a bystander in the global AI infrastructure boom. By leveraging its geography, cheap energy, and timely partnerships, the country is positioning itself as a serious and formidable player in the new digital world economy.
