According to a Bloomberg report released on Monday, Ruoming Pang, who led Apple’s AI model development, is leaving the company to join Meta. His move marks yet another high-profile addition to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s newly formed superintelligence division.
Pang previously headed the internal team at Apple responsible for training AI foundation models that power Apple Intelligence and other on-device AI features. However, Apple’s AI efforts have so far lagged behind those of competitors like OpenAI, Anthropic, and even Meta. Reports suggest Apple has considered integrating third-party AI models to enhance the upcoming Siri upgrade.
Sources told Bloomberg that Pang’s exit could signal the beginning of a broader exodus from Apple’s struggling AI division.
Nonetheless, Pang’s expertise in developing compact, device-based AI models could prove valuable for Meta. In recent months, Zuckerberg has attracted top talent from AI powerhouses such as Google DeepMind, OpenAI, and Safe Superintelligence to strengthen Meta’s position in the race for AI dominance.
