Microsoft has invested $80 billion in fiscal year 2025. This money will be used to build data centers adapted to artificial intelligence and develop infrastructure that meets global AI requirements.

Expanding AI capabilities around the world

According to Brad Smith, Microsoft’s vice president and chairman, the bulk of this money will be spent on building data centers dedicated to artificial intelligence models. These centers will serve to expand AI and cloud-based applications around the world. More than half of the $80 billion investment is planned to be spent in the United States, which emphasizes the US’s leading position in technological development. Microsoft’s fiscal year 2025 ends in June.

“Looking ahead, we understand that artificial intelligence is a world-changing technology. AI has the potential to boost innovation and improve efficiency in all sectors of the economy,” Smith wrote. He also stressed the US’s potential to lead this technological revolution by leveraging its strengths and international cooperation.

Stargate: The Artificial Intelligence Supercomputer

Earlier this year, Microsoft and OpenAI entered into talks to build a data center that would house an AI supercomputer called Stargate. The construction cost of the facility was expected to exceed $100 billion. However, Microsoft later listed OpenAI as a “competitor,” signaling a new era in the relationship between the two companies.

Demand for AI infrastructure is growing

The rapid development of artificial intelligence has dramatically increased the demand for data centers. In the future, AI technologies are expected to consume significantly more energy, which could cause problems with electricity supply. Microsoft is seeking to ensure the sustainability of AI infrastructure through this investment.

Towards a global leadership in AI

Microsoft’s massive $80 billion investment demonstrates the company’s commitment to maintaining its leadership in AI. By expanding its AI-enabled data centers, the company is poised to develop innovative AI solutions and reshape the global technology landscape.
