OpenAI is looking to renegotiate its revenue share agreement with Microsoft by 2030. The company currently pays Microsoft 20 percent of its revenue, but that figure is expected to drop to 10 percent in the coming years. The changes come as OpenAI is overhauling its organizational structure — the company will now remain a nonprofit entity, but will transition to a for-profit public benefit corporation (PBC).
Microsoft currently has exclusive rights to use OpenAI’s technologies on its Azure platform, and has invested billions in it. The agreement between the companies runs through 2030 and includes two-way revenue sharing.
According to Bloomberg, Microsoft has not yet approved the new structure proposed by OpenAI, as the changes could affect how its investment is protected.
