Today, we bid farewell to one of the most iconic platforms of the early 2000s – Skype. As of May 2025, this service will be permanently discontinued. The latest version of Skype for Windows contains a message stating, “Starting in May, Skype will no longer be available. Continue calling and messaging via Microsoft Teams.” This announcement marks the final chapter for a platform that once revolutionized digital communication, leaving many users in shock.
A legacy fades
Launched in 2003, Skype quickly rose to prominence, becoming one of the leading applications for video calls and messaging. It symbolized convenience and accessibility in the digital communication era. In 2011, Microsoft acquired Skype, ushering in a period of transformation that saw the platform evolve through multiple changes.
From Windows 10 to Teams
Microsoft initially attempted to integrate Skype into the Windows 10 ecosystem, but this strategy proved unsuccessful. Eventually, Skype was reintroduced as a standalone app. In 2017, recognizing the growing demand for corporate communication solutions, Microsoft launched Teams, a collaborative platform that gradually overshadowed Skype. With the introduction of Windows 11, Teams became the primary communication tool, further diminishing Skype’s relevance.
