SpaceX has officially announced the acquisition of AI coding startup Cursor in a deal valued at $60 billion, marking the largest acquisition in the company’s history.
Founded by MIT graduates in 2022, Cursor quickly became one of the fastest-growing AI developer tools in the world. Its AI-powered coding assistant gained massive adoption among software engineers, helping the company surpass $4 billion in annual recurring revenue (ARR) within just a few years.
The foundation for the deal was laid in April, when SpaceX entered a strategic partnership with Cursor. At the time, SpaceX secured an option to acquire the company for $60 billion, while an alternative structure would have involved a $10 billion collaboration agreement if the acquisition did not move forward.
Since then, Cursor has accelerated product development, launching major platform updates, introducing its own AI models, and expanding its developer ecosystem through new SDK releases. Those moves strengthened its position in the increasingly competitive AI coding market.
The acquisition is expected to significantly enhance SpaceX’s AI capabilities. Industry analysts believe Cursor’s technology, developer network, and vast code-related datasets could become strategic assets for advancing Grok and other AI initiatives across the SpaceX ecosystem.
The move also intensifies competition in the AI coding space, where products such as OpenAI’s Codex and Anthropic’s Claude Code are racing to become the default development environment for software engineers.
The transaction is expected to close in the third quarter of 2026 through an all-stock deal. Following the announcement, investors viewed the acquisition as a major step in SpaceX’s broader AI strategy.
More importantly, the deal highlights a growing trend across the AI industry: the most valuable assets are no longer just foundation models, but the platforms where millions of developers spend their time every day. By acquiring Cursor, SpaceX is betting that the future of AI will be built directly into the tools developers use to create software.
