Exponential flight: life inside the spaceship
Standing at the absolute center of the AI universe right now is a feeling that is hard to put into words. I would describe it as accelerating away from Earth on a spaceship at relativistic speeds. According to special relativity, you go to sleep, and when you wake up, two days have passed on Earth—meaning you have to deal with two days’ worth of momentum in a single day. The next day, as you continue to accelerate, one of your days equates to three Earth days, then four. We are living and operating in this exact kind of mind-bending, exponential velocity.
People often ask me, “Do you go to bed constantly paranoid about what you’ll wake up to?” I have spent a lot of time studying historical figures who managed high-pressure situations. Paranoia or constant worrying is never a productive response. Instead, we must learn to respond rationally and keep dangers in proportion, much like a surgeon performing a complex operation or a military officer commanding a high-stakes mission. Yo-yoing between panic one day and complacency the next is a hallmark of immature decision-making. True executive maturity lies in understanding the risks while maintaining a fundamental sense of calm.
When we founded Anthropic, we had to answer a fundamental question: how do we fund the incredibly expensive creation of these frontier models without choosing a business model that conflicts with our core values? If you pick a path that fundamentally opposes your principles, you eventually face a catch-22: you either betray your values or become irrelevant.
We looked at the consumer tech and social media landscapes, where the core incentive is driven by advertising revenue—maximizing engagement and capturing as many user minutes as possible. We deliberately chose a different path: the enterprise market. We did this because the most profound positive impacts of AI fall squarely under the enterprise banner:
- Biology and medicine: Working with pharma, biotech, and academic research groups to cure previously untreatable diseases.
- Energy: Making energy grids cheaper and more efficient.
- Economic growth: Boosting baseline productivity across industries.
Enterprise clients value deep trust and long-term relationships over gimmicks. This creates a powerful synergy with our ultimate goal of deploying these models in a positive, safe, and responsible manner.
The “SaaSpocalypse” and the future of software
Shortly after we released our Claude coding capabilities, billions of dollars in traditional software (SaaS) market value vanished overnight—a phenomenon traders dubbed the “SaaSpocalypse.” If AI continues to improve at this breakneck pace, what happens to traditional software?
My advice to incumbents is simple: do not be complacent. If your entire competitive advantage (moat) relies on the fact that “we wrote complex software that no one else can write,” that moat is going away. AI can write software at incredible speeds. However, other moats will endure—specifically, deep customer relationships, industry-specific workflows, and unique domain expertise (the operational know-how). While companies that put their heads in the sand will have a very difficult time, the software industry as a whole will not shrink. Instead, AI is expanding the pie, making the total market significantly larger.
Competition and the industry’s “race to the top”
The prevailing public narrative suggests that the leaders building this technology are bitter rivals who refuse to cooperate. This is a complete misconception. For instance, I have known Demis Hassabis, who leads the Gemini model development at Google, for 15 years. We actively buy compute from Google, and we swap safety ideas all the time.
Within the industry, we participate in what I call a “race to the top” through mutual inspiration. When he achieves a breakthrough in biology with AlphaFold, it inspires us to push boundaries in bio as well. When we pioneered interpretability research (understanding the inner mechanics of AI models), they started their own interpretability tracks. This isn’t hostile competition; it is a collaborative pull. While there will always be untrustworthy actors in any frontier industry, our goal is for the trusted, responsible players to unite, set high safety standards, and naturally compel the rest of the industry to follow suit.
A new century of scientific progress
As a former biologist, I look at what Claude is achieving today and am genuinely stunned. Seeing Claude diagnose complex medical issues that a team of specialist doctors missed, or watching it excel at computational chemistry and drug design, is remarkable. These are tasks that typically require a lifetime of rigorous human training.
If we can navigate the immediate existential risks of this technology—and I am increasingly optimistic that we will—AI will grant us a compressed century of scientific and medical progress. Consider the world in the year 1900, the premature deaths, and the material deprivation that we have completely conquered today. AI has the potential to deliver that same magnitude of human advancement in a fraction of the time, fundamentally elevating the quality of the human experience.
