Kazakh School Students Develop an App for Individuals with Speech Impairments

Students from the Nazarbayev Intellectual School of Physics and Mathematics in Almaty have created a mobile app designed to convert impaired speech into a form easily understood by others. The app is aimed at assisting individuals with dysarthria, cerebral palsy (CP), or those recovering from a stroke.

How It Works

The mobile application operates on artificial intelligence algorithms using OpenAI’s Whisper model. It sends requests to the trained model, which transforms impaired speech into text. The text is then vocalized through text-to-speech technologies.

Presentation

The team showcased their project at the Decentrathon 2.0 Republican Hackathon, held on October 18-19 at Satbayev University. The event brought together over 1,000 participants from 17 regions of Kazakhstan. The team secured 2nd place in the “Artificial Intelligence” category and was awarded a cash prize of 700,000 tenge.
