Y Combinator reveals 13 startup ideas it wants to fund in Fall 2026

If you’re building a startup for Y Combinator, these are the problems the accelerator is actively looking to back.

Y Combinator has published its Fall 2026 Request for Startups (RFS), highlighting 13 areas where it believes founders have the biggest opportunities to build the next generation of technology companies.

What is YC looking for?

The list includes:

  • The Primer — an AI tutor that helps children improve reading, writing, and math skills like a personal teacher.
  • The Future of American Defense — low-cost, high-impact defense technologies.
  • A Cloud for Small Software — simple cloud infrastructure built specifically for AI agents.
  • Multiplayer AI — collaborative environments where multiple users and AI agents can work together.
  • Compute at Sea — floating data centers that can provide scalable computing power.
  • AI-Powered Consumer Products for 1 Billion People — everyday AI applications designed for mass adoption.
  • AI for the Aging Population — technologies that improve the quality of life for older adults.
  • Operating Systems for the Physical World — software platforms that manage construction, logistics, and industrial operations.
  • The Best Time to Build in Crypto — infrastructure focused on practical blockchain and digital asset applications.
  • Data for the Real World — technologies that collect real-world data from infrastructure, manufacturing, agriculture, and the environment.
  • Proving You’re Human — next-generation identity and verification systems for the internet.
  • AI-Native Compliance Infrastructure — AI tools that automate compliance, regulatory monitoring, and auditing.
  • Self-Maintaining APIs — AI agents capable of detecting API changes and automatically updating codebases.

The new RFS highlights three major directions shaping the next wave of startups. First, AI is expanding beyond software into the physical world. Education, healthcare, defense, finance, infrastructure, and industrial operations are becoming key areas for AI-driven innovation.

Second, the rise of AI agents is creating demand for entirely new infrastructure. Founders are now building cloud platforms, collaboration tools, and software systems designed specifically for autonomous agents.

Third, the ideas come directly from people working on today’s biggest challenges. The list was compiled with input from YC partners, founders in the current batch, and leaders responsible for solving real-world operational problems.

Y Combinator is not saying that startups must fit one of these 13 categories to be funded. However, the list offers a strong signal of where one of the world’s leading startup investors sees the greatest opportunities.

Rather than looking for AI features alone, YC is increasingly interested in startups that solve meaningful real-world problems, build critical infrastructure, and create products capable of serving millions of users.
