Uzbekistan’s Senate has approved amendments to the law on the introduction of the Uzbek alphabet based on the Latin script. The new rules provide for a gradual transition to the updated alphabet.
Documents officially issued under the current alphabet before the new law takes effect will remain valid. The circulation of national currency and securities issued using the current alphabet will also not be restricted.
The changes will also apply to outdoor advertising and business signboards. Shops and service centers currently using the letters O‘, G‘, Sh and Ch in their signage will be allowed to continue using them until the signs become unusable or until a designated deadline expires.
The same approach will apply to certain symbols, signs and indicators used by state bodies and organizations. The provisions are intended to make the transition to the new alphabet more gradual and reduce the need for citizens and organizations to immediately replace existing documents, signs and other materials.
