One of the biggest challenges in robotics is creating robotic hands capable of performing delicate, human-like movements. Norwegian robotics company 1X has taken a major step forward by introducing a new generation of hands for its humanoid robot NEO.
The new hands feature 25 degrees of freedom, allowing them to perform highly precise and natural movements similar to those of a human hand. They are equipped with advanced sensors that can detect touch, measure grip force, and safely interact with people.
Thanks to these capabilities, NEO can now handle a wide range of everyday household tasks that have traditionally been difficult for robots. It can zip up clothing, use everyday tools, connect USB-C cables, assemble LEGO models, pick up coins, pour tea, and clean surfaces. The robot is also capable of performing certain sign language gestures.
These improvements bring humanoid robots closer to becoming practical assistants not only in industrial environments but also in homes. Robots like NEO could eventually help with daily chores, elderly care, and a variety of service-related tasks.
According to 1X, NEO is being developed as an AI-powered humanoid designed to work safely alongside people. The introduction of its new hands marks another important milestone toward creating robots that can interact with the physical world as naturally as humans.
