The primary and most visible cause of startup failure is running out of cash. A founder must monitor precise monthly cash outflows (burn rate) and calculate remaining operational lifespan (runway).
To learn how to extend your runway through sustainable self-funding, read our article: What is bootstrapping? Growing a startup without external capital
1. Differences between gross burn and net burn
- Gross burn rate: The total sum of monthly operational expenses (salaries, hosting, office rent, marketing).
- Net burn rate: The net monthly loss remaining after deducting monthly gross revenue from monthly operational expenses.

Y Combinator co-founder Paul Graham categorizes startups into two states: Default Alive (projected revenue will reach profitability before cash runs out) and Default Dead (projected revenue will not cover burn rate without additional fundraising). Founders should focus efforts on reaching a Default Alive state.
When your runway drops below 6 months, initiate a new fundraising round immediately or reduce your operational expenditure.
