It has been reported that Musk aims to transform the Starbase spaceport in Texas into a city
SpaceX has officially requested the judge of Cameron County, Texas, to recognize the Starbase spaceport as a city. Elon Musk shared this announcement on the social media platform X.
Musk revealed that he had petitioned local judge Treviño to hold a referendum to determine whether SpaceX’s Starbase, the spaceport used for rocket launches, could be granted city status.
“Incorporating Starbase as a city would accelerate the development of the necessary infrastructure to transform the area into a world-class residential hub for the hundreds of people who already call it home and for future employees who aspire to contribute to humanity’s advancements in space exploration,” the petition stated.
According to the billionaire, the area is already home to hundreds of residents, with established roads, schools, and hospitals. For this reason, granting Starbase city status would be a logical step.
Previously, Musk stated that SpaceX’s headquarters is now officially located in the city of Starbase, Texas.
It is noted that the final decision regarding the status of Starbase will be determined by a public vote by the residents of Texas.
In 2023, reports emerged that Musk was planning to build a city for his employees in Texas.
The proposed site for this future residential area is approximately 35 miles (about 56 kilometers) from the state capital, Austin. Modular homes have already been installed on former agricultural land in Bastrop County, and the construction of 110 permanent residences has begun.
