OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is reportedly preparing to launch its own AI-driven web browser in the coming weeks, aiming to compete directly with Google Chrome. According to a July 9 report by Reuters, this new browser is expected to reimagine how users interact with the web, much like Perplexity’s recently launched Comet and The Browser Company’s Arc.
The browser will reportedly integrate closely with ChatGPT, enabling certain user interactions to take place within the assistant itself rather than redirecting users to external websites. Reuters also noted that the browser may include Operator, OpenAI’s proprietary web-browsing AI agent, as a core feature.
OpenAI had already explored the idea of building a browser to rival Google Chrome back in 2024, as reported by The Information. Much like Perplexity, OpenAI likely seeks more direct access to user behavior data and the freedom to build novel, AI-first user experiences that are not filtered through Google’s platforms.
