Tajikistan has unveiled plans to establish what is described as Central Asia’s first Applied Artificial Intelligence Innovation Hub, based on the Area AI platform in Dushanbe. Supported by NVIDIA, the initiative aims to develop AI expertise, advance research and help bring emerging technologies into practical use.
The project was presented on October 21, 2026, at the Embassy of Tajikistan in Germany, in Berlin. It is designed to foster collaboration between universities, startups, developers and industrial companies.
New Opportunities for AI Research and Industry
One of the hub’s main objectives is to strengthen AI skills, train local specialists and create opportunities to test AI solutions in practical projects. The initiative also seeks to build stronger connections between academic research and the needs of businesses.
A key focus is Physical AI — a field involving artificial intelligence that enables robots and intelligent machines to understand and interact with the physical world. These technologies can be applied in manufacturing, automation and industrial operations.
A laboratory is also planned for Khujand, where AI technologies are expected to be tested for applications in the mining industry, among other areas. The facility could provide a setting for developing and evaluating solutions tailored to industrial needs.
Why It Matters for Central Asia
Developing AI infrastructure in Central Asia could help the region build a stronger pool of technical talent, expand research capabilities and improve the competitiveness of local industries. If implemented as planned, the hub could create new opportunities for universities, technology startups and industrial companies in Tajikistan to collaborate and exchange expertise.
However, the project’s long-term impact will depend on how the hub is implemented, the capabilities of its laboratories and whether the technologies developed there are adopted in real-world industrial settings.
