Uzbekistan Plans a 50 MW Nuclear-Powered Data Center

Japan’s Muroosystems Corporation is participating in plans for a data center in Uzbekistan that would be supplied entirely by electricity generated by small modular reactors (SMRs). The proposed facility, planned for the Jizzakh region, would have an estimated power demand of 50 megawatts (MW). If completed as intended, it could become one of the world’s first data centers powered entirely by an SMR.

What role will the Japanese and German companies play?

On December 20, 2025, Uzbekistan’s Agency for Atomic Energy, known as Uzatom, signed a memorandum of understanding with Muroosystems Corporation as part of broader cooperation between Japan and Central Asian countries.

Muroosystems plans to provide technical support through its German subsidiary, NUKEM Technologies Engineering Services. The company’s proposed responsibilities include nuclear safety assessments, engineering services and technical consulting. Its involvement is intended to help align the project with international safety practices and guidance from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Muroosystems acquired NUKEM in 2024, combining its experience in information technology infrastructure with specialist engineering expertise in the nuclear sector.

How will the data center be powered?

The proposed data center is expected to require 50 MW of electricity. It is planned to connect directly to one of the small modular reactors at the nuclear power plant under construction in the Forish district of the Jizzakh region.

The plant’s design includes Russian-made RITM-200N small modular reactors, each with a planned electrical output of approximately 55 MW. One of these reactors is being considered as the data center’s primary power source.

A direct connection could provide a dedicated source of electricity without relying entirely on the national grid. However, publicly available announcements have not yet detailed how backup power would be supplied during reactor maintenance or unexpected outages.

Why does the project matter?

Artificial intelligence, cloud computing and large-scale data processing require substantial amounts of electricity. For data centers, a reliable, continuous supply is as important as having sufficient generating capacity.

Nuclear power is one potential source for meeting this demand. Connecting a data center directly to a reactor could create a predictable, continuous customer for the power plant while supporting the operation of energy-intensive digital infrastructure.

For Uzbekistan, the initiative could form part of broader efforts to expand digital infrastructure and support services that require substantial computing capacity. Its practical impact will depend on financing, technical implementation, safety requirements and the eventual construction schedule.

When could the project be completed?

The memorandum between Uzatom and Muroosystems establishes a framework for cooperation, but it does not mean that construction has been completed or that the facility is ready to operate.

According to The Times of Central Asia’s report published on October 12, 2026, the project remains at the memorandum stage. A confirmed construction start date and operational timeline have not been publicly announced.

If implemented as planned, the project could become a notable example of international cooperation at the intersection of nuclear energy and digital infrastructure.
