Anthropic has added a new /design skill to Claude Code. The feature, currently in research preview mode, allows developers to visually create and edit a project’s interface before writing code.
Using the /design command, the user describes the desired feature or interface. Claude then analyzes the project context and generates several editable UI artboard variants. The developer can pick the one they like and make changes to it.
The most important aspect is that once a design is selected, Claude moves directly to implementing it in the project’s actual code. This means the developer doesn’t need to switch to a separate design program to recode the mockup.
The feature is currently available as a research preview in Claude Code CLI and Desktop, offered to Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise users.
This update brings the visual artboard capabilities previously introduced in Claude’s Claude Design product directly into the coding workflow. Anthropic launched Claude Design on April 17, 2026.
Claude now not only writes code, but first shows the interface → generates variants → the user chooses → then converts it into code. This could significantly shorten the AI-assisted frontend development process.
