Meta’s Muse AI app has reached the No. 1 position in the U.S. App Store’s free app rankings, overtaking ChatGPT.
Launched on September 8, 2026, Muse gained strong early traction. During its first 12 days, the app recorded around 1.8 million downloads across the U.S. and Canada, compared with approximately 1.3 million downloads for ChatGPT over the same period.
Muse takes a simpler approach to AI assistants. Instead of presenting users with numerous models, modes and technical settings, the app is designed around a more straightforward interface and positions AI as a “coworker” that can help with everyday tasks.
Meta’s large social-media ecosystem may also have contributed to Muse’s rapid growth. The company has promoted the app across platforms including Facebook and Instagram, giving it access to a massive potential user base.
However, Muse’s rise should not be interpreted as evidence that it has technologically surpassed ChatGPT. The App Store ranking reflects app popularity and downloads, rather than the overall capabilities or quality of the AI models.
Muse’s performance also highlights how competitive the consumer AI market has become. As AI assistants move beyond traditional chatbots, companies are increasingly competing not only on model capabilities but also on simplicity, user experience and how easily AI fits into everyday digital life.
