Apple App Store rules relaxed — new feature in Spotify app

Spotify recently received approval from Apple for an update to its app that will allow iPhone users in the US to purchase audiobooks directly from within the app. Users can now see audiobook prices and easily purchase additional listening hours beyond the initial 15 hours.

Spotify says the update will make it easier for users to receive audiobooks for the first time or for repeat listening, and will also help publishers and authors expand their audience.

The change comes after a US court ruled in 2023 that Apple would stop taking commissions on purchases made outside of the App Store.

Previously, users could only purchase audiobooks through the website. Now, the process can be done in a few steps within the app. Additional listening hours — “top-ups” — cost $13 each for 10 hours and can also be purchased within the app.

Earlier this month, Spotify also gave iPhone users the option to purchase a subscription outside of the App Store.
