Google Gemini Explained: How It Works and What It Can Do
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Telegram

Google is making big moves in artificial intelligence with Gemini, its powerful AI models, apps, and services. But what exactly is Gemini, how can you use it, and how does it compare to other AI tools like ChatGPT, Meta’s Llama, and Microsoft’s Copilot?

What is Gemini?

Gemini is Google’s next-generation AI model family, developed by DeepMind and Google Research. It comes in different versions:

  • Gemini Ultra is the largest and most powerful.
  • Gemini Pro is a slightly smaller but still advanced model.
  • Gemini Flash is a faster, more efficient version of Pro.
  • Gemini Nano is designed to run on devices without needing an internet connection.

All Gemini models can work with text, audio, images, videos, and even code. This makes them different from Google’s older LaMDA model, which was limited to text. However, there are ethical concerns about how AI models, including Gemini, are trained, especially when they use publicly available data without explicit permission.

How Does Gemini Work?

Gemini models power various apps, including the Gemini chatbot on the web and mobile. On Android, the Gemini app has replaced Google Assistant, while on iPhones, it is integrated into Google and Google Search apps. Users can even bring up the Gemini overlay on their screens to ask questions about what they are viewing, such as a YouTube video.

Gemini in Google Workspace

Gemini also plays a big role in Google’s workspace tools. The AI Premium Plan, which costs $20 a month, gives users access to Gemini’s capabilities in Google Docs, Gmail, Slides, Sheets, and Meet. This version, called Gemini Advanced, can analyze huge amounts of data, run Python code, and assist with deep research. It also helps with trip planning by pulling details from Gmail, Google Search, and Maps to create custom itineraries.

Gemini for Businesses

For businesses, Gemini is available through Google’s Gemini Business and Gemini Enterprise plans, offering AI assistance for meetings, document organization, and security features. In Gmail and Docs, Gemini can summarize emails, write content, and brainstorm ideas. In Chrome, it serves as a writing assistant, while in Maps, it helps summarize reviews and suggest places to visit. Developers can also use Gemini in tools like Firebase, Google Photos, and YouTube.

Gemini Extensions and Gems

Another feature is Gemini Extensions, which integrate with Google services like Drive, Gmail, and YouTube to provide smart responses and summaries. Gemini Advanced users can create custom AI chatbots called Gems, tailored to specific needs like coaching or travel planning. Meanwhile, Gemini Live allows users to have voice conversations with Gemini, even interrupting it in real time.

Gemini’s Image Generation

Gemini can also generate images through Google’s Imagen 3 model. This tool translates text prompts into detailed images and even supports rendering text within images. After some controversy, Google temporarily paused Gemini’s ability to create images of people but has since reintroduced the feature for some users.

Gemini for Teens

Google has even created a version of Gemini for teens, offering AI assistance with extra safeguards for younger users. Meanwhile, in the smart home space, Gemini is being integrated into Google TV, Nest devices, and other products to offer personalized content suggestions and home automation features.

What Can Gemini Models Do?

Gemini models can handle complex tasks, from writing code to solving math problems and conducting research. While Google’s Gemini Ultra is its most advanced model, it is currently unavailable to the public. Instead, users can access Gemini Pro and Gemini Flash, with the latter being optimized for speed and efficiency. Developers can customize these models for specific needs, such as financial analysis or cybersecurity.

Gemini Nano: AI on Your Phone

For those wanting AI directly on their phones, Gemini Nano runs locally on some Android devices like the Pixel 8 and Samsung Galaxy S24. It powers features like summarizing audio recordings and suggesting smart replies in messaging apps. Future versions of Nano will help detect phone scams and provide detailed weather reports.

What is Project Astra?

Project Astra is another AI initiative from Google’s DeepMind. It aims to create real-time AI assistants capable of understanding live video and audio. Google is experimenting with integrating this technology into smart glasses, but there are no confirmed products yet.

Will Gemini Come to the iPhone?

Apple has also shown interest in using Gemini. The company is reportedly in talks with Google to bring Gemini AI into Apple Intelligence, its suite of AI-powered tools. However, there are no official details yet about how or when Gemini might appear on iPhones.

Final Thoughts

Google’s Gemini AI is still evolving, with new updates and features being introduced regularly. Whether it’s helping businesses, enhancing Google apps, or powering smart home devices, Gemini is set to become a major player in the AI space.
