The Baikonur Cosmodrome has successfully conducted the first test launch of the Soyuz-5/Sunkar rocket from the Baiterek complex. The launch took place from Site 45 as part of scheduled flight-construction trials.
During the mission, both the first and second stages functioned nominally, successfully deploying the mass-dimensional dummy onto its target trajectory. This milestone confirms the complex’s operational readiness and bolsters Kazakhstan’s capacity for future space initiatives.
The Baiterek project focuses on establishing a state-of-the-art launch infrastructure. Key ground facilities—including control, fueling, and safety systems—have been extensively modernized. The complex is noted for its high degree of automation and full compliance with international standards.
The facility integrates over 40 technical systems that manage the entire launch cycle. According to developers, the Soyuz-5 rocket is capable of delivering up to 17 tons of payload to low Earth orbit (LEO). Notably, it operates on eco-friendly kerosene and liquid oxygen.
The realization of this project is set to expand Kazakhstan’s footprint in the global space industry, enhancing its capabilities in satellite deployment and infrastructure development.
