The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has successfully concluded an IT skills training program for 287 female customs officers from Uzbekistan’s State Customs Committee. Conducted in partnership with IT Academy through USAID’s Trade Central Asia program, the initiative aimed to enhance digital skills, leadership abilities, and professional confidence among the participants.
The training equipped customs officers with practical knowledge in IT management and data analytics, enabling smarter, data-driven decision-making processes. Participants also improved their capacity to leverage digital technologies, which will lead to faster, more efficient customs operations and smoother, more secure cross-border trade.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony, U.S. Charge d’Affaires to Uzbekistan, Heather Byrnes, highlighted the importance of women’s contributions to the future of customs services. “Talented women play a crucial role in shaping the future of customs professionals. They inspire innovation, leadership, and the next generation of leaders. The U.S. Government is proud to support Uzbekistan’s efforts in digitalization, economic development, and security through the Digital Uzbekistan 2030 strategy.”
This program is particularly significant as Uzbekistan’s customs system, with over 150 software modules, is on the cusp of full digitalization. By improving the IT skills of customs officers, the nation can ensure more efficient cargo movement while reducing human errors and opportunities for corruption.
Moreover, empowering women customs officers with technical expertise not only enhances operational efficiency but also strengthens gender equality in Uzbekistan’s public sector, paving the way for a more inclusive and innovative future.
