Apple Inc.’s artificial intelligence crisis is finally beginning to ease. The iPhone maker’s new Siri AI and Apple Intelligence features, despite being two years late and far from groundbreaking, are proving competent enough to start pulling the company out of one of its biggest product and PR debacles in decades.
The core of the new functionality relies on personal context and on-screen awareness technology. These are the exact features Apple introduced in June 2024, only to delay until now. Following a few days of testing across iPhone, Mac, and iPad, these functions have proven to significantly speed up workflows.
The new Siri and its redesigned “Search or Ask” interface successfully handle a variety of everyday tasks:
- Moving calendar appointments by mentioning the contact, updating the event name, and replacing dial-in details with an in-person address.
- Retrieving specific show or movie recommendations suggested by family members weeks prior.
- Locating exact order confirmation emails from online retailers.
- Scanning messages and emails to extract recent restaurant recommendations from a spouse.
- Scheduling calendar events directly from data displayed on-screen within third-party applications.
- Searching across emails, files, and text messages for vacation ideas discussed with family members at various times.

Logic and practical usability
Beyond contextual capabilities, the new Siri finally displays true logic. For years, asking Siri to navigate to a local sushi spot might result in directions to a city in Japan 5,500 miles away that shared the restaurant’s name. Fifteen years after its inception, this issue has finally been resolved.
The revamped assistant can handle many of the standard queries everyday consumers typically throw at OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google Gemini, or Anthropic’s Claude. This includes AI-powered web searches, requesting recipes or historical trivia, editing text and emails, checking optimal tire pressure for specific car models, and pulling up local movie showtimes.
For the first time, Siri works the way it was originally intended to. While it roughly competes with where leading chatbots stood about six months ago, it represents a massive leap forward for Apple. The preinstalled functionality is now strong enough that many average users will not need external apps like ChatGPT at all, reserving rival chatbots purely for highly specialized, productivity-focused workflows.
The Analogy: In the Apple ecosystem, Siri AI functions like iMovie—it expertly handles the basics and a bit more. ChatGPT remains the Final Cut Pro of the space, designed for “power users” who require heavy lifting like deep research, coding, advanced data analysis, complex reporting, and legal document reviews.
Infrastructure sosts and the path to monitization
For now, Apple must still prove to consumers that its AI capabilities are worth utilizing, let alone paying for. However, operating the vast server infrastructure that powers continuous conversations in Siri and tools like Image Playground comes with astronomically high maintenance costs.
As the ecosystem matures over the next 12 months, Apple is expected to split the service into free and premium tiers:
- Free features: Baseline Siri capabilities and on-device personal context features will remain entirely free with no rate limits.
- Paid features: Advanced conversational features, world-knowledge queries, and heavy generative AI tools that rely heavily on cloud processing will likely face rate limits and eventually require a separate subscription, mirroring the ChatGPT model. While Apple currently allows iCloud+ users to extend these limits, a dedicated AI subscription tier is highly probable down the line.

The first developer betas of iOS 27 and macOS 27 released following WWDC 2026 have exposed tangible evidence that Apple is actively preparing for two major hardware form-factors.

- The iPhone Mirroring app on macOS 27 has been updated to stretch out, displaying wider, iPad-like layouts running directly from an iPhone.
- Apple explicitly urged developers during WWDC to design for “app adaptability,” ensuring software functions seamlessly across expanding screen sizes.
