One of the biggest partnerships in the AI industry has now moved into the courtroom. Apple has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing the company of unlawfully obtaining and using its confidential technologies. The case is not about ChatGPT or AI models. Instead, it centers on OpenAI’s efforts to develop new AI hardware.
According to Apple’s complaint, several former Apple engineers copied confidential documents, hardware designs, and manufacturing information before leaving the company to join OpenAI. The lawsuit specifically names OpenAI’s head of hardware, Tang Tan, and former Apple engineer Chang Liu.
Apple claims that these trade secrets may have been used in the development of OpenAI’s upcoming AI devices. The allegations have drawn even more attention following OpenAI’s acquisition of Jony Ive’s startup, io, which accelerated the company’s hardware ambitions.
Through the lawsuit, Apple is seeking to stop OpenAI from using its trade secrets, require the return of any confidential information, and recover damages for the alleged misconduct.
OpenAI has denied all allegations, stating that it does not rely on competitors’ proprietary information and that Apple’s claims are without merit. The case is still ongoing, and no court has reached a final decision. At this stage, these remain allegations made by Apple and have not been proven in court.
