How to build your seed round pitch deck: A guide for startup founders

A well-crafted pitch deck is essential for startup founders to attract investors and secure funding. Y Combinator, one of the world’s most prestigious startup accelerators, offers a clear and compelling approach to creating an effective seed round pitch deck. This article analyzes their recommendations and highlights key points for creating a strong pitch deck that will convince investors.

Keep it simple and clear
Investors review a lot of pitch decks every day. Therefore, clarity and simplicity should be one of the main principles of the presentation. Each slide should clearly convey the main idea, without being overloaded with unnecessary details and technical jargon. Ideally, a pitch deck should consist of 10-12 slides, each of which should present the main idea.

Key Slides for a Successful Pitch Deck
Y Combinator recommends that a successful pitch deck should have the following components:

Problem

Strictly and concisely state the problem your startup is solving. The problem should be important, relevant, and supported by statistics. If possible, explain why this problem needs to be solved now.

Solution

Explain how your product or service solves this problem. Show how your proposed solution is superior to existing alternatives and why your startup can solve this problem most effectively.

Market Opportunity

Investors want a clear understanding of the size of the market. Therefore, provide specific numbers for the Total Addressable Market (TAM), Serviceable Available Market (SAM), and Serviceable Obtainable Market (SOM).

Product

Bring your product to life with visuals, demos, or screenshots. Explain its key features and how it will provide value to users.

Business Model

Explain in a simple and understandable way how your startup will generate revenue. Your revenue source may be subscriptions, transaction fees, or advertising – the main goal is to show investors a clear and understandable financial flow.

Traction

If your startup has achieved initial results, present them to investors. For example, key indicators such as revenue, active users, partnerships, or growth rates are important to investors. Social proof and positive customer reviews will also build trust in your startup.

Competition

Identify your direct and indirect competitors. Use an analytical table to show how your startup is superior to others.

Go-to-market strategy

Explain how you will acquire customers. This could be through paid marketing, viral growth, partnerships, or direct sales strategies.

Financial data and projections

While early-stage startups may not have extensive financial data, providing investors with future financial projections and milestones can help them understand your growth potential.

Team

Introduce the founders and core team members. Explain their experience, expertise, and why they are the best people to grow this business.

Investment

Explain clearly how much capital you are seeking to raise and what the funding will be used for (e.g., team expansion, product development, marketing). Also, explain how the investment will take your startup to the next stage.

Key design and presentation tips

Use simplicity: Avoid too much text or unnecessary elements. It is more effective to convey important points in the form of bullet points or visuals.

Use minimal text: Each slide should be understandable within a few seconds.

Back up your claims with numbers: Numbers and clear statistics make your claims credible.

Maintain consistency in design: Slides should be professional and visually appealing.

Perfecting Your Pitch
A well-structured pitch deck is important, but how you present it is just as important. Consider these tips:

Practice before your presentation: Your speech should be confident, fluent, and clear.
Be prepared for investor questions: It’s important to be able to answer in-depth questions about market size, competitors, and financial projections.

Create a compelling story: Investors invest in vision and perspective, not just numbers.

Creating a seed round pitch deck requires strategic storytelling, accurate data, and a compelling vision. By using the structure and best practices offered by Y Combinator, founders can create a strong pitch deck that can attract investors and secure successful funding.
