Microsoft makes Azure Container Apps Express generally available

Microsoft has made Azure Container Apps Express and the underlying Container Apps Sandboxes generally available (GA). The new capabilities are designed in particular for AI agents and workloads that need fast, isolated environments for running code.

Azure Container Apps Express allows developers to deploy containerized applications to Azure without having to configure a full infrastructure environment first. The platform handles much of the underlying compute, networking, scaling and other infrastructure decisions automatically. Microsoft positions Express as a developer-first and agent-first deployment model.

An isolated environment for AI agents

One of the key parts of the release is Container Apps Sandboxes. They provide isolated environments where AI agents can safely execute generated or untrusted code.

Each sandbox operates within its own security boundary. According to Microsoft, sandboxes are provisioned from pre-warmed pools and can start in less than one second. The infrastructure can also scale to thousands of concurrent sandboxes when demand increases.

This is particularly relevant to AI agents because agents increasingly need to write and execute code, process files or interact with external data. Running these tasks in an isolated environment can reduce the risks associated with allowing generated code to interact directly with the main application environment.

Resources scale down when idle

Another important feature is scale-to-zero. When a sandbox is stopped and not being used, Microsoft says there are no CPU or memory charges. When needed, it can be started again quickly. Sandboxes also support snapshots that preserve the full state, including memory and disk, allowing environments to be suspended and restored in sub-second time.

Azure Container Apps Express similarly scales applications down to zero when they are idle and brings them back when demand returns. This model can be useful for AI applications and other workloads with unpredictable or bursty traffic.

What does Express change?

The Express deployment model removes the need to manage a separate Container Apps environment before deploying an application. Developers provide a container image, region and application configuration, while Azure provisions the underlying resources automatically.

However, Express does not include every capability available in standard Azure Container Apps. GPU workloads, custom domains, Dapr, zone redundancy and some advanced networking features are not supported in Express. Microsoft recommends standard Container Apps environments when applications require those capabilities or greater infrastructure control.

According to Microsoft, the Express service is now available across more than 40 Azure regions. Thousands of applications were created during its public preview period before the general availability release.
