Telegram has begun the process of obtaining the necessary licenses to operate its platform legally in Malaysia. This initiative has been warmly welcomed by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), which also urged other messaging services to comply with similar requirements.
Under new regulations set to take effect on January 1, 2025, the Malaysian government aims to enhance online safety, protect users, and strengthen oversight of messaging services and social media platforms. These regulations are designed to increase the accountability of service providers in ensuring the safety of users, particularly children and vulnerable groups.
MCMC stated that implementing these requirements will help create a trustworthy and safe online environment in Malaysia, protect against harmful content, and improve user experience. As a result, Malaysian citizens are expected to benefit from better service quality, enhanced security, and improved protections.
Additionally, MCMC advised service providers to complete the licensing process by December 31, 2024. Delays beyond this deadline could result in stricter regulatory measures. MCMC reaffirmed its commitment to supporting service providers to ensure a smooth application process.
