China’s competition for artificial intelligence talent is moving to an increasingly younger age. Companies such as Tencent, Geely and other technology firms are no longer waiting until students graduate from university — they are identifying promising young people while they are still at school and building long-term AI talent pipelines.
The growing competition is being driven by an expected shortage of AI professionals. According to estimates cited by Rest of World, China could face a shortage of up to 5 million AI specialists by 2030. At the same time, demand for skilled AI workers is already significantly outpacing supply.
For example, Tencent has launched programs and camps for students aged 13–18, covering areas ranging from AI product development to quantum computing. The goal is to expose teenagers to advanced technologies and identify promising talent at an early stage.
ByteDance founder Zhang Yiming has also supported a research program designed to identify talented young students. The initiative reportedly selects only around 30 students each year for intensive training.
Meanwhile, automotive and technology company Geely has introduced programs aimed at training school students in AI and electric-vehicle technologies. Participants can potentially receive employment opportunities after completing their education, with starting salaries comparable to those offered to fresh university graduates.
Chinese AI companies are also changing their approach to recruitment. Some firms are becoming less focused on formal university credentials and more interested in curiosity, natural ability and practical technical skills. The trend reflects a broader shift from “hiring trained specialists” to “developing future specialists.”
China’s AI talent shortage has become a strategic issue for the country’s technology sector. As demand for AI engineers, researchers and developers continues to grow, companies are increasingly looking for ways to secure talent years before traditional recruitment would normally begin.
