Want to land a role at a tech giant? Here are the core traits Meta’s CTO demands

The allure of Silicon Valley isn’t just about the prestige—it’s about the staggering compensation. Recent federal filings reveal that research scientists at OpenAI can earn anywhere from $245,000 to $685,000. Meanwhile, software engineers at Meta command base salaries ranging from $120,000 to $480,000.

But what does it actually take to unlock these doors? Andrew “Boz” Bosworth, Meta’s Chief Technology Officer—the man overseeing everything from the Metaverse to AI-powered glasses—recently shared the specific “DNA” of a successful hire at the social media giant.

The Bosworth Blueprint: What makes a top tier employee?

According to Bosworth, technical brilliance is just the baseline. To truly excel, an employee must possess these four defining traits:

  1. The best employees are “relentless in the pursuit of doing great work.” They don’t just complete tasks; they take the results personally. At Meta, pride and a sense of ownership in what you build are non-negotiable.
  2. In an industry where pivots are the norm, Bosworth looks for people who can “roll with the punches.” When plans shift or budgets are cut, these individuals don’t react with fear—they meet change with curiosity and excitement.
  3. Strong hires are straightforward. They value direct communication and accept feedback in the spirit it’s given—as a tool for growth, not a personal attack.
  4. Beyond the code and the strategy, Bosworth emphasizes a simple yet often overlooked trait: being a “good person.”

When friction arises, he follows a four-step framework: listen to one party, ask for reflection on the cause, encourage the other party to see the situation through a different lens, and finally, bring both sides together for a genuine reconciliation.

Bosworth’s philosophy isn’t an outlier; it mirrors the values of other industry leaders:

  • Patrick Collison (Stripe CEO): Focuses on “determination and competitiveness.” He seeks out those who understand that “doing anything of significance is hard,” but pairs that drive with “interpersonal warmth.”
  • Satya Nadella (Microsoft CEO): Has famously shifted Microsoft’s culture from a “know-it-all” to a “learn-it-all” mindset. For Nadella, empathy is the core leadership trait—without it, no other achievement truly matters.

If you’re aiming for the pinnacle of Big Tech, your “soft” skills are increasingly becoming your “hardest” assets. Technical mastery will get you the interview, but ownership, adaptability, and empathy will get you the job.
