Google faces $7 billion lawsuit

A class action lawsuit worth nearly $7 billion has been filed in the UK competition court against Google. The plaintiffs are alleging that Google has a monopoly on the search market.

What happened?

An antitrust lawyer named Or Brooke has filed a class action lawsuit on behalf of British organizations that have used Google’s advertising service since January 1, 2011.

What does the lawsuit say?

  • Google is accused of using its almost complete dominance in the search and search advertising markets to charge advertisers high prices.
  • The company is forcing users to use Google Search and Chrome through agreements with Android manufacturers.
  • According to the plaintiff, many businesses have no choice but to use Google Ads — which eliminates the possibility of real choice.

What is the goal?

Brooke is seeking to hold Google accountable for its monopoly practices and seek damages on behalf of advertisers in the UK.

What’s the context?

In recent years, tech giants, particularly Alphabet (Google’s parent), have been facing a spate of antitrust investigations and lawsuits in Europe and the UK. This has increased pressure on tech giants to ensure greater transparency and fair competition in global markets.

The lawsuit is important for startups and small businesses, who are often heavily reliant on the pricing and algorithms of advertising platforms. If such monopoly practices are stopped, a competitive environment will emerge — and that’s crucial for tech ecosystems that are struggling to adapt.
